Henrike – Senior Consultant, München

The world of logistics and supply chain is becoming increasingly complex and harder to predict by the minute: When will items arrive? Where should they be kept or warehoused? These are the questions being asked time and time again by our customers. My job as a consultant is to meet these challenges by working together with customers to optimize their supply chain processes. I like to work analytically, which enables me to approach tasks in a structured way. For example, I first determine our customers’ current situation and then go about determining further possibilities. And of course, I work with them to implement the possibilities we identified.

Team members at 4flow are very hard working, but open at the same time. Everyone takes time for each other, and the team really works together. Individuals are very approachable across the hierarchy and this unique team spirit sets us apart. Women often decide against starting a career in consulting because they don't think they’re suited to the tasks or daily work life associated with it. I can only encourage women that with the right team, like the one you find at 4flow, these assumptions can be proven wrong. Diversity is very important at 4flow and I’m excited to encourage it within the organization.

Jonathan - Senior Consultant, Berlin

My journey with 4flow started when I participated in the 4flow challenge in 2019 as a student. In the competition, I worked together with other master’s students on a supply chain case study. As a team, we made it to the finals. The project and the 4flow challenge days were a great experience that led to a close friendship with my team and future colleagues. I got to know 4flow and then started first as a working student, and later as a consultant.

As a working student, I had already met lots of people on the 4flow team and could build a network that later helped me find the right people to contact about any kind of topic. And I had already worked on lots of projects as a student, which meant I already had valuable experience and a good idea of what working in consulting at 4flow is like. So far as a consultant, I’ve worked on several projects in the automotive industry, as well as other industries like machinery manufacturing, retail or FMCG. I got to take on responsibility in customer projects quickly. Thanks to that experience, I learned a lot, and I’m proud of what I achieved. It was a really great feeling to have so much trust put in me after such a short amount of time.

FAQ

Is it possible to specialize in a specific area?

The world of supply chain is diverse. If you want to start in logistics engineering or data science, you’ll specialize in your area from the beginning. If you choose to start in management consulting, you’ll grow familiar with all kinds of industries, topics and projects from day one. That way, you’ll gain diverse experience to prepare for all kinds of challenges that might come your way in your career. When you reach the level of project lead, you can choose which area you want to specialize in.

What does a typical workday look like in management consulting?

We’ve got good news: the typical consultant week, where you spend Monday through Thursday at the customer and come to the office on Friday, isn’t how we work. We have a nice mix of virtual and on-site projects at our customers. On the whole, we don’t travel as much as we did a few years ago. When you aren’t traveling, you can choose if you want to come into one of our modern offices or if you’d rather work from home.

What does a typical workday look like in data science or logistics engineering?

The biggest difference from management consulting is the kind of tasks – even if they’re just as varied. In the data science team, you’ll mostly handle data analysis and modeling, so your work is more behind the scenes. But you’ll also have projects where you work directly with customers. In logistics engineering, you’ll take on long-term projects to plan and implement intralogistics concepts. Depending on the project phase, you’ll be either on-site at the customer or you can choose to work from a 4flow office or remotely from home.

How big are the project teams?

Project teams are usually made of 3 to 5 people. We build these teams anew for every project, so together you’ll have the competencies you need to tackle your tasks.

Can I choose the projects I work on?

Your manager will give you an overview of all upcoming projects so you can list your preferences. Unfortunately we can’t make any guarantees, but we try to consider your priorities when building project teams.

How long are projects in management consulting on average?

Generally, you’ll spend about 4-5 months on a project. Of course, there are some exceptions – some projects might last only 3 weeks or even a whole year. For these especially long projects, different teams are usually involved, so you can still expect some variety.

How many projects are international?

Looking forward to gaining international experience? Perfect! You can expect about 25-50% of your projects to be international.
